At EDULEARN 2026, FAMES presented EFDS outcomes, highlighting the European need for hands-on microelectronics training to bridge the skills gap.
The European semiconductor industry faces a critical challenge: a severe shortage of skilled designers capable of navigating advanced nodes like Fully Depleted Silicon on Insulator (FD-SOI). While theoretical knowledge is covered in standard academic curricula, the practical “know-how” required for industrial applications is often missing. To share our solution to this European skills gap and learn from global trends, the FAMES Pilot Line participated in the EDULEARN 2026 conference in Palma. EDULEARN is one of Europe’s premier education conferences, gathering over 800 academics, technologists, and higher education leaders from around the world to discuss emerging learning innovations.
During the conference, we presented a publication detailing the pedagogical framework of the first FAMES European FD-SOI Design School (EFDS2026). The presentation highlighted the school’s objectives, its design-based learning approach, and the highly positive feedback from the inaugural edition, where 100% of surveyed attendees reported that their expectations were met or exceeded. We also shared our analysis of this feedback, outlining the practical corrections planned for the next edition, such as allowing more time for hands-on labs and accelerating attendance confirmations to aid international travel arrangements.
FAMES played a central role by organizing EFDS and providing the advanced technological context that makes this training unique. Showcasing this at EDULEARN demonstrated how pilot lines can directly support higher education by granting participants access to industrial-grade Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, analog/RF/digital design flow in advanced technological nodes, presentations on future 7nm and 10nm nodes, and insights into embedded non-volatile memory solutions.
The feedback received from the EDULEARN audience was incredibly validating. Exchanges with other universities and educational experts confirmed that the hands-on, immersive model of EFDS stands out in the European academic landscape. The strong interest and validation from this international education network provide a compelling argument for FAMES to pursue and expand its training initiatives, proving that targeted education is essential for the widespread adoption of its technologies.
By focusing on FD-SOI; a technology inherently suited for energy-efficient, low-power applications, EFDS directly contributes to eco-innovation. Training the next generation of designers to exploit dynamic body-biasing and reduce leakage currents will lead to greener, more sustainable electronic systems.
The insights gained from EDULEARN will help refine future FAMES training programs. By aligning our curriculum with broader European educational needs and the latest pedagogical innovations discussed at the conference, EFDS will continue to effectively bridge the gap between academic theory and practical industrial implementation.
Moving forward, we will implement the practical adjustments identified during the first EFDS edition and prepare for it to become a recurring annual event every January. Furthermore, inspired by the networking at EDULEARN, we aim to integrate EFDS more closely with formal academic training at the university level and foster broader collaborations with European institutions to scale our educational impact.
