Partner's corner: Pekka Pursula, VTT

VTT is a visionary research, development and innovation partner. We drive sustainable growth and tackle the biggest global challenges of our time and turn them into growth opportunities. We go beyond the obvious to help society and companies to grow through technological innovations. We have over 80 years of experience in top-level research and science-based results. In chips, VTT focuses on specialized microelectronics, providing devices and systems around the computing core with RF, photonics, MEMS sensors, 3D integration and Quantum Technology.

As our digital society develops, to meet the growing demand for computing and data transmission in a sustainable way, new types of specialized hardware will be needed. VTT is addressing these challenges in FAMES through the development of add-on technologies for FD-SOI and Si-CMOS. One part is the development of RF filters that, with low-loss, and without power consumption, can filter signals in the frequencies used for the next generation of wireless communication. Secondly, the development of non-volatile programmable transistors for analog AI computations and non-volatile memories that can improve the AI inference efficiency by several orders of magnitude.

We see that combining energy-efficient FD-SOI technology with these RF and NVM components can provide significant power efficiency improvements that enable the development of wider bandwidth communications, more power-efficient AI, and the digital society overall.
