Dr Wenke Weinreich is one of the partners involved in the Fames project. She joined the Fraunhofer Center for Nanoelectronic Technologies (CNT) in 2006 and became Director of the CNT division in 2020, as well as Deputy Director of Fraunhofer IPMS the following year. Find out more about her and the reasons why she chose to get involved in the FAMES pilot line project.
I’m deeply motivated by the opportunity to help shape the next generation of microelectronics in a sustainable way. In FAMES, we’re not only improving performance and efficiency but also examining the environmental footprint of every innovation. That combination – cutting-edge semiconductor research and responsible technology development – is what makes this work so exciting to me.
Fraunhofer IPMS, together with IZM-ASSID, contributes expertise in 300 mm wafer processing and integration of emerging memory technologies. We focus on ferroelectric materials and novel device concepts, such as compute-in-memory architectures. The main challenges are to integrate new materials like hafnium-oxide-based ferroelectrics into CMOS process flows, to ensure reliability and scalability, and to generate robust environmental data to guide sustainable design decisions.
FAMES plays an important role in building Europe’s technological independence by developing advanced, low power semiconductor nodes and integration technologies adapted to the core industry needs of Europe. The environmental assessments embedded in the project ensure that sustainability remains a guiding principle from the start. In the long term, this will lead to greener, more efficient chips that strengthen Europe’s competitiveness while reducing the ecological impact of electronics.
