The FAMES pilot line supports innovation in advanced semiconductor technologies for a sovereign European chip industry.

The FAMES Pilot line supports innovation in advanced semiconductor technologies for a sovereign European chip industry.

About FAMES Pilot Line

This pioneering initiative is driving semiconductor technologies in Europe by supporting the emergence of higher-performance, more energy-efficient, and more sustainable chip designs. Its objectives align with those of the EU Chips Act, namely, to bolster the EU semiconductor industry and support European technological sovereignty through cutting-edge innovations, facilitated access to R&D and training.

A consortium of semiconductor R&D leaders

The FAMES Consortium brings together an outstanding group of partners : CEA-Leti, coordinator of the pilot line (France), imec (Belgium), Fraunhofer Mikroelektronik (Germany), Tyndall (Ireland), VTT (Finland), CEZAMAT WUT (Poland), UCLouvain (Belgium), Silicon Austria Labs (Austria), SiNANO Institute (France), Grenoble INP-UGA (France), and the University of Granada (Spain).

An advanced ecosystem from material to end user

No fewer than 43 companies, from startups and SMEs to global corporations, have formally expressed their support for the FAMES pilot line, placing the initiative at the center of a vibrant ecosystem representing:

  • The entire electronics value chain, from materials providers and equipment manufacturers to fabless companies, EDAs, IDMs, and system houses
  • End end users from the IT and telecommunications, automotive, medical device, space, and security markets.

Experience unparalleled R&D resources and innovative chip design skills

The FAMES pilot line offers European semiconductor stakeholders from industry, research, and academia access to a unique slate of advanced semiconductor technologies, plus chip design, prototyping, testing, demonstration, and manufacturing capabilities. This unique open-access model allows users to access the pilot line’s unparalleled resources in one of two ways:

  • By submitting proposals for custom projects,
  • or by responding to annual open calls for projects.

FAMES mission

Prepare the next 10-7nm generation of FD-SOI technology and support the EU Industry to reach Europe’s societal goals

FAMES technologies

FAMES can be used for the development and testing of five kinds of technologies :

10nm and 7nm
Several types of embedded non-volatile memories
Radiofrequency components
switches, filters, and capacitors
3D integration
heterogeneous and sequential
Small inductors for DC-DC converters
Power Management
Integrated Circuits (PMIC)

At the core of FAMES lies the ambition to boost innovation, by transferring research outputs and leads to the industry for accelerating the development of prototypes and viable market products.
